We’re not talking about the occasional urge to eat a whole block of chocolate or the ability to watch an entire TV season on Netflix in one rainy day. We’re talking about binge, key word, LEARNING.
Binge learning entails the attempt to absorb an overload of information. Is it common? Yes. Is it effective? No. Can we fix it? We’re here to tell you how.
Binge learning is more common than we realise, partly due to the fact that many of us do not realise it is a bad thing. How can too much study possibly be a bad thing? This mindset results in learners continuing to feed themselves with information, unaware that the average human can only withhold 3-5 new pieces of information at any given time. It is also common due to the fact that traditional forms of employee training require learners to progress through long documents and hour long videos. In our technological age, it is frankly impossible to commit to such training, and further, benefit from it.
Although binging learning sounds like the best thing you could possibly do to inform yourself with information to the brim, it is undoubtedly ineffective. Cognitive overload occurs when too much information is absorbed at one time, causing either the information to be immediately forgotten or that pre-existing knowledge is forced out of one’s memory. Cognitive overload or binge learning is completely eradicated after the implementation of microlearning or mLearning.
Microlearning! Mobile-based microlearning provides employees with an ideal training strategy, whereby they are able to learn when it suits them. They are able to progress through training on-the-go, whether it is on their commute to or from work, waiting for a flight or at the top of Machu Picchu. In other words, we mean wherever and whenever. Not only is this appealing to employees, but also makes learning convenient, thus facilitating boosted engagement and completion rates, as well as the skills and expertise in your workforce.
