HIPAA Compliance Courseware added to SC Training (formerly EdApp)’s editable Content Library

With new lessons added regularly, we are excited to announce another addition to SC Training (formerly EdApp)’s groundbreaking editable Content Library: HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) training. Provided by our learning partners at Improvement Sciences, all HIPAA lessons can now be found in our editable Content Library.

What is HIPAA?

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is a set of rules and guidelines covered in five sections called Titles. Title I deals with health insurance coverage for those who change/lose their jobs. Title II covers health care fraud and abuse. It also sets out standards for eHealth records. Title III speaks to health insurance law and medical insurance deductions. Title IV deals with group health plans. Lastly, Title V is about company-owned life insurance policies.

The background

In alignment with the microlearning approach that both SC Training (formerly EdApp) and Improvement Sciences share, Dr. Michael Hunter, Founder and Carl Husa, Chief Innovation Officer at Improvement Sciences, have developed the comprehensive HIPAA compliance course.

ImSci is committed to increasing motivation and engagement to drive personal and professional development. This is achieved through the development of more engaging content and the delivery of this personalized content to various organizations’ platform of choice. Due to the abundance of expertise in the learning space along with their extensive capabilities and insight, SC Training (formerly EdApp) is thrilled to welcome the HIPAA content to our Content Library.

Why was HIPAA originally created

Originally signed in 1996, HIPAA was mainly created to make sure that people who lose or change their jobs continue to have health care coverage. However, it moved on to combat waste, fraud, and abuse and to modernize the flow of healthcare information via electronic health records.  This was done by defining a set of national standards for securing and protecting the personal medical records of patients.

Since its origin, the core HIPAA law has been modified and strengthened to improve its effectiveness. The Act includes significant penalties for violations, called “breaches.” The largest reported breach to date affected 79 million patient records and resulted in a 16 million dollar fine.

HIPAA in the Health Industry

HIPAA’s four main purposes are:

  1. Privacy of health information
  2. Security of electronic records
  3. Administrative simplification
  4. Insurance portability

Thanks to the contributions of Improvement Sciences, the SC Training (formerly EdApp) platform now hosts the invaluable HIPAA content to help covered entities better educate their workforce on the risks and safeguards for protecting sensitive personal and health information.

Why is HIPAA different with SC Training (formerly EdApp)?

SC Training (formerly EdApp)’s approach to HIPAA training content respects the busy lives of today’s professionals and appreciates the need for content backed by learning science, which continuously aligns with the ethos of SC Training (formerly EdApp). The content also includes a high number of touchpoints at each step of the training, which provides more insight for administrators into what the learners are really understanding. Improvement Sciences, using the SC Training (formerly EdApp) platform, has developed highly interactive courseware to maximise participation and improve retention of the material.

Consistent with its commitment to learning science-based approaches to training, Improvement Sciences encourages companies who deploy SC Training (formerly EdApp)’s HIPAA courseware to enable Brain Boost: SC Training (formerly EdApp)’s implementation of spaced repetition, a proven method for dramatically increasing retention. These frequent reminders mitigate the risk throughout the year until the next mandatory compliance training check-up is due. SC Training (formerly EdApp) shares this notion and is equally dedicated to providing a continual resource to learners undertaking HIPAA training, ensuring that knowledge is retained by reiteration and practical applicability.

What does the HIPAA training cover?

Hosted within SC Training (formerly EdApp), the HIPAA training content teaches the most paramount skills for clear communication on regulations surrounding healthcare information. Specifically, the following objectives can be accessed within the HIPAA courseware:

  • HIPAA Overview
  • Information to Be Protected
  • Privacy Rule
  • Security Rule
  • Breach Rule
  • Threats and Remedies
  • Best Practices
  • Scenarios for practice
  • Knowledge check and certificate of completion
  • Resources

SC Training (formerly EdApp)’s mobile-first microlearning platform enables HIPAA training that is more engaging than traditional HIPAA courses. Information is better retained with microlearning through features found on the SC Training (formerly EdApp) platform like spaced repetition to cement knowledge exposed to learners in their long-term memory. Additionally, each lesson can be completed in 10 minutes or less, respecting the working professional’s busy life.
