Hazardous Materials (Silica, Polymerics, and Waste)

Keep your crew alert and proactive with this safety course from SC Training. This hazardous materials (HAZMAT) course explores polymeric safety, crystalline silica exposure, waste cleanup, and the polishing and cleaning of chemicals.

Learn the impact of polymers on human health, from short-term effects like skin irritation and nausea to long-term effects like cancer and potential harm to the heart and liver. The course then offers practical ways to prevent exposure by using the right personal protective equipment (PPE) and keeping the area well-ventilated. The last module concludes with safe work practices for cleaning chemicals.

As these topics are quite technical, it’s critical to put your team’s HAZMAT knowledge to the test through on-the-job training. Luckily, this mobile-first platform allows you to do so with practical assessments. Simply scan each member’s QR code to access the checklist designed to monitor their progress—no manual paperwork required.

What is HAZWOPER?

HAZWOPER is short for OSHA’s Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard. This set of guidelines applies to workers who are in constant contact with hazardous substances and waste. According to OSHA standards, if your team engages in these five specific categories, initial and annual training is needed for compliance.

  • Voluntary clean-up operations located in uncontrolled hazardous waste sites
  • Clean-up operations required by a governing body in uncontrolled hazardous waste sites
  • Corrective clean-up operations in sites where there is a presence of uncontrolled hazardous waste
  • Emergency response operations for the release of and/or threat of release of hazardous substances
  • Hazardous waste operations in storage, treatment, and disposal facilities

The goal of HAZWOPER is to reduce worker injuries and illnesses produced by unsafe and careless exposures to hazardous substances. As these present immediate and long-term health effects on the body, every worker must be competent enough to handle the risks of their everyday jobs.

What are the requirements for HAZWOPER refresher training?

To satisfy OSHA’s HAZWOPER training requirements, your team must have undergone their initial 24-hour or 40-hour training. The length of training depends on whether your workers are regularly or occasionally exposed to handling HAZMATs. You also need to consider the category under which they fall under OSHA’s permissible exposure limits (PELs).

Upon satisfactory completion of their initial training, eight hours of refresher training are required. OSHA allows this to be completed in segments so long as the minimum eight hours have been met by the employee’s anniversary date.

Note that this refresher training cannot be accomplished through computer-based programs alone. As their employer, you must offer them field experience with a qualified trainer and assessments of on-the-job work tasks. This certifies that their knowledge and skills are up-to-date. Refresher training must happen annually to retain certification.

Reduce workplace hazards through HAZWOPER refresher training

Don’t leave your workers in the dark! HAZWOPER refresher courses are essential to protecting them from known and unknown hazardous substances. This gives them the skills and knowledge to plan ahead and respond calmly when danger arises. It’ll also come in handy if unwanted calamities arise, as proper training could save lives.

Compliance training is necessary not only for the protection of your team but also for the welfare of your business. Refresher courses guarantee that every worker in the company is competent to face unexpected situations head-on.
