On-the-job Training Example #1- Self-instruction Training

Learning is at its most effective when it resembles play. While this may seem like an anathema to a stuffy, corporate enterprise, or global retail chain, all that really matters when it comes to company training is the outcome. If you want your learners to actually absorb important information, presenting it in an unengaging, forced manner in a formal environment is not a recipe for success. An expensive Learning Management System might tell you that people are taking their eLearning courses but it won’t tell you what people actually learned. If you want to embrace gamification training, here’s what you need to include:

Gamification Elearning Platform Feature #1 – Mobile Learning

Everyone has a smartphone and they usually spend too much time using them. However, unlike laptops and desktops, they’re not regarded as work tools and so knowledge transfer immediately has fewer barriers to transgress when a mobile device is used as the training platform. By delivering learning to a mobile device, learners can learn anywhere, anytime, and at their own pace which instantly makes it more effective.

Training matters are further improved by the modern-day computing power of mobile devices and their large screens. These facets have made mobile phones the most popular gaming platforms in history: they’re capable of running incredible 3D environments and casual puzzle games alike. Few smartphone owners haven’t played a game of some type on their phone so it’s a perfect platform to deliver gamification-based training.

Of course, games take a great deal of development time and money. Fortunately, mobile learning systems regularly rely upon ready-made templates. These allow instructional designers to simply upload knowledge, questions, and answers to a ready-made game template and suddenly you have a fully gamified microlesson – in minutes.

Gamification Elearning Platform Feature #2 – Microlearning

Microlearning is the practice of breaking content down into small, bite-sized, topical pieces. It suits gamification in training software because a short lesson requires a short game – there’s no point in embarking on a Lord of the Rings-style Role-Playing adventure to teach someone how to perform a specific work task – an engaging casual game will do. Be sure to reinforce both correct and incorrect answers to ensure that the short time spent with your gamified training is most effective. You can see more on creating an effective microlesson here.

Gamification Elearning Platform Feature #3 – Competition and prizes

Gamification benefits from general, enjoyable interactivity when it comes to training. However, things step up a level if you add elements of competition. Scoring learners for correct answers or fast completion times speaks to their competitive nature. This is enhanced further when offering prizes for achievements along the way (we find offering multiple small prizes over the opportunity to win a single, large one creates better results. With typical course completion rates hovering under 20%, gamification with prizes pushes this past 90% and even beyond – it’s not uncommon to see learners actively repeating courses to achieve better scores when using microlearning-based gamification training.

Gamification Elearning Platform Feature #4 – Leaderboards

Displaying learners’ progress to a group is a great way to push competitive types to excel while nudging poor performers to do better. Whether it’s individuals, groups, or groups of groups, nobody wants to be last and (gentle) group peer pressure acts as an effective motivator.
