Why mobile learning is the future of training

March 8, 2019

mobile learning is the future of training

Mobile learning is defined as training or education that is conducted through the means of a portable device; like a tablet computer or smartphone. As training transforms to incorporate more digital formats, it is essential for businesses to understand how the changes in learning consumption occur. Most Millennials and Gen-Z’ers have grown up using mobile devices to gain access to social networks, information about current events and general knowledge regarding aspects of their everyday life. Consequently, it’s important to leverage this native comfort and discover why mobile learning is the future of training.

Technology can be a double-edged sword: while the use of tech in education has increased, rapid delivery and rapid demand for information have been linked to decreases in attention span. As such, it’s important to implement a mobile learning strategy properly lest it be rendered ineffective.

1. It can deliver microlearning

Learning is at its most effective when it comes in small, easy-to-absorb pieces. Microlearning is perfect for distributing via smartphone due to the small fie sizes and small technology requirements.

2. It can be distributed anywhere

Large eLearning courses (especially those with video) are tricky to distribute – especially to areas with limited broadband infrastructure. Mobile learning training can be distributed via the cloud.

3. Version control is fixed

When you distribute large amounts of courseware, being certain that everyone is looking at the right version of it is very tricky. However, centralised training content, that’s distributed via an app, will always be up-to-date.

4. Easier to produce

Regular eLearning can be a real problem to create as authoring is complex and expensive. However, mobile learning can make use of templates which means questions and answers can be uploaded into existing lesson containers with minimal fuss (or skills).

5. Easier to update

Regular eLearning is difficult to create and almost harder to update. Consequently, learners are often left trying to relate to out-of-date case studies. However, the simpler authoring involved with mobile learning means that anyone can easily update lessons – with last night’s news if need be.

Mobile Learning is the wave of the future because it is accessible, versatile, and easily transferrable. Many employees already have a device that allows them to easily access the information, access information that they need to know, and can be accessed where they are and not specifically stationed at the office. It is a versatile way to transfer knowledge that provides a wide-range of options for employers.
