What is OSHA 30?

OSHA 30 is defined as a training program provided by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to promote workplace safety. It’s a comprehensive course that covers various topics related to occupational safety and health. The "30" in OSHA 30 refers to the number of training hours required to complete the program.

During the training, participants learn about potential workplace hazards, safety regulations, and best practices for preventing accidents and injuries. OSHA 30 is important because it helps workers understand their rights and responsibilities regarding safety, equips them with the knowledge to identify and address hazards, and promotes a culture of safety in the workplace.

Who needs OSHA 30 training?

OSHA 30 hour training is highly recommended for those who work in industries or job roles that involve higher levels of risk and exposure to workplace hazards. This typically includes construction workers, supervisors, foremen, project managers, and anyone involved in construction-related activities.

Although, OSHA 30 training can also be beneficial for anyone who wants to enhance their understanding of workplace safety and health, regardless of their specific job role or industry.

Is OSHA 30-hour training mandatory?

OSHA 30-hour training is not required for most workers. General safety training may be required by OSHA, but obtaining an OSHA card through 10-hour and 30-hour courses is otherwise voluntary. However, specific states have legal requirements that mandate 30-hour training specifically for construction supervisors:

  • Nevada: Assembly Bill 148 requires OSHA 10 for construction workers and OSHA 30 for supervisors within 15 days upon hiring.
  • New York City: Local Law 196 states that construction workers at major construction sites are required to complete 30 hours of training.
  • Philadelphia: City code requires 30 hours worth of OSHA training for supervisors when renewing a contractor’s license under Section 9-1004.

As a best practice, it’s generally recommended to double check if your state has specific requirements to get an OSHA 30 certification online.

What are the benefits of completing OSHA 30-hour training?

Both OSHA 10 and OSHA 30 training courses tackle safety topics that can prepare your team for emergency scenarios on the job. Even so, the 30-hour training presents other benefits that might make it a better fit for your training needs.

  • More comprehensive coverage: OSHA 30 is three times longer than OSHA 10. It gives a more detailed and in-depth understanding of workplace hazards, OSHA standards, and safety practices for your team’s development.
  • Supervisory skills: OSHA 30 includes training on how to implement and manage safety programs, conduct inspections, investigate accidents, and enforce safety rules, which are skills critical for leadership roles.
  • Risk management and program development: OSHA 30 emphasizes more advanced topics like hazard identification, risk management techniques, and health and safety program development. These can give your team more control over their safety.
  • Employment advantage: Due to its depth and scope, OSHA 30 is often required or preferred for supervisory positions, project managers, and safety officers, offering more potential for career advancement.
