Skill Training Examples

In this article, we’ll explore engaging and effective skill training examples to consider for your training, whether that’s in-person or through elearning. We’ll go beyond the traditional training methods and discover other ways to develop the skills of your team.

1. On-site practical training

On-site practical training is a skill training example that gives your workers hands-on experience to help them perform their tasks better. Here, they actively participate throughout the entire learning process, which makes training instruction more engaging. Usually, it involves close supervision of managers while workers practice or carry out their duties. This kind of training works best when assisting workers transitioning into new roles or onboarding new hires.

Assess your team members’ skills on the job and track their progress with SC Training (formerly EdApp), a fantastic hybrid training tool. With its Practical Assessments feature, you only need a mobile device to evaluate practical performance by scanning a QR code. This way, you can easily access your digital checklist. Then, you can automatically track their hands-on training results in the admin experience –  no need for paper checklists or spreadsheets.

2. Shadowing

Shadowing is a passive skill training example that involves trainees observing experienced workers, particularly on how they carry out certain tasks. It’s a way for new hires to gain a better understanding of their new role or position. This also serves as an opportunity to gain practical advice and learn specific techniques from the person they are shadowing.

Skill Training Example - Shadowing

For example, in telephone skills training, a new customer representative can shadow experienced ones and observe how they handle different situations. This way, they’ll also gain insight into how they navigate through various customer service tools.

3. Simulation Training

Another example of skills training is simulation training, which immerses workers in a controlled or simulated learning environment. This aims to prevent the negative effects of certain actions that, when taken in a real context or circumstance, could be risky for your business.

Examples of how to carry out this kind of training include the use of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), mock-ups, and training models. This skill training example is particularly prevalent in fields like aviation and healthcare, where it may be risky for trainees to use equipment or do certain tasks while still lacking the necessary knowledge and expertise.

4. Role-Playing

While role-playing does not involve the use of AR or VR technology, it’s somewhat comparable to a simulated training session where real-life scenarios are being recreated for training. This is a useful skill training example for practicing certain actions and behaviors and preparing workers for various situations they’ll possibly deal with at work. It works best for industries that deal with customers, including sales and hospitality.

Skill Training Example - Role-Playing

In retail training, for example, staff members can act out a scenario in which they would deal with an unpleasant customer. Through this activity, they’ll be able to explore many problems and find solutions in a controlled environment. This prepares them for the various challenges they’ll face in the real world.

5. Hackathon

A hackathon is a common event in the tech industry where participants get together to work on a project. The project will be coded by the team’s programmers in just 24 hours (with little to no sleep at all!) before presenting them to everyone. For instance, the event’s main theme could be the creation of new software features or the resolution of client issues with the software.

It’s a fun activity that allows your team to learn while interacting with other colleagues whom they don’t get to work with often. Most significantly, the competitive aspect of this skill training example will encourage participants to push themselves beyond their comfort zones, think outside the box, and develop stronger collaboration.

6. Virtual Reality (VR) Training

Virtual Reality (VR) training is an immersive learning experience that gives your staff practical training on duties using technology and equipment without performing them in real situations yet. It’s especially important if they still lack examples of talent and information required to perform their tasks. So, to aid in the improvement of their learning skills examples, this form of training skill example makes use of VR technology. It’s mostly prevalent in businesses like aviation, health care, and other similar industries.

7. Microlearning Courses

Microlearning, as the name suggests, is the practice of delivering short but informative courses that typically last no longer than 20 minutes. Microlearning courses help avoid overwhelming workers with lengthy information. Instead, lessons are focused only on the key topics, so they’ll only absorb the information that matters most.

This strategy can help increase concentration and boost long-term memory. It’s challenging to fully pay attention during training if it’s too long. So, if you don’t want to lose your learners during the training process, make sure your training materials are brief, straightforward, and simple to complete. Microlearning functions in this way.

In SC Training (formerly EdApp), you can easily get started with this approach by taking free microlearning courses available in its course library and sharing it with your team. You can also create your own courses using its course creator tool.

But if you don’t have time to start from scratch, you can work with their expert team, every step of the way through SC Training (formerly EdApp)’s Course Creation Services (add-on). Through this service, you’ll work with their customer success team and expert instructional designers to create impactful bite-sized courses for your team.

8. Sell Me This Item

“Sell Me This Item,” commonly referred to as “Sell Me This Pen,” is another enjoyable skill development example. You can select anything that participating employees can “sell” by using any object in the room. The product your team must advertise in this case should be common, like a pen or a mug. Then, they will be required to develop a marketing strategy.

This skill training will help your team in changing their perspective and explore unconventional marketing strategies if they have only employed conventional marketing techniques before. This activity can also help them unwind a little and rediscover their creative abilities.

9. Mentoring

Mentoring sessions foster business growth by exchanging knowledge and experiences. To better position their mentee for success, the mentor shares knowledge, expertise, suggestions, and personal perspectives with them. The mentee, on the other hand, converses with the mentor throughout their meetings, opens up about any challenges they encounter, and seeks guidance from their mentor.

In a similar light, mentors can hone their abilities and put their knowledge to the test. They can improve their performance at work by learning fresh viewpoints and ideas from their mentees. Through this growth opportunity, meaningful connections between members and leaders may develop into successful collaborations for your organization.

10. Case Studies Presentation

Presenting case studies is a skill training example that focuses on examining real facts and information from real events involving key clients and customers. Here, your workers examine the challenges and topics, push themselves to think creatively and acquire information to develop alternate answers. Along with encouraging employee cooperation, strategic thinking, creativity, decision-making, and analytical abilities are examples of job skills they’ll hone through this activity.
